What is Lymphedema?

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by the accumulation of lymph fluid in tissues, leading to swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system, responsible for draining excess fluid and supporting immune function, is impaired. Primary lymphedema is typically congenital, caused by genetic abnormalities in lymphatic development, while secondary lymphedema results from damage to the lymphatic system, often due to surgery, radiation, infection (e.g., cellulitis), or trauma. Cancer treatments, particularly for breast cancer, are a frequent cause of secondary lymphedema.
